Study design
The sampling frame was the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Structure plan area within West Central Scotland. A stratified random sample of 6000 names and addresses, of adults aged 17 or over, was provided by CACI Ltd for the local authorities within this area (i.e. regions of Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Falkirk, Glasgow City, Lanarkshire, Inverclyde etc (see map)). The survey period was February 2010 to September 2010 with the use of a 21 page postal questionnaire and three reminders. Completed questionnaires were entered into a prize draw for a £50 gift voucher to encourage participation. A response rate, after taking into account deaths and movers, of just under 40% was achieved (n =2092).
